I shoulda been an engineer...

Hey, all of you who, like me, are on the Humanities/Social Sciences job market this year.

Take a look at this.

They are hiring one hundred new faculty members at once. 100. One zero zero.

When I look at job ads in my field, I get excited when I see that a department is hiring two people. Whew, I think - a banner year. Doing some major expansion over there.

I am in the wrong line of work, obviously...

Yeesh! Can you do math? I can't do math or I'd pull a switcheroo...it's all about the perspective, eh?

Nope, totally can't do math. At all. But I love to fantasize about 100 jobs for types like me opening up all at once at one university...Ah, to dream...:)

My undergraduate engineeering students graduate from college and start making more money than me right away.

You just have to not think about these things.

We are in the humanities because ... okay, remind me again what is so great about the humanities?

Good lord! I have no other words. Damn my right-brain genes. Damn them!

I know, Maggie - freaking insane.

Jo(e), you are right...and as a junior (i.e. still fairly innocent) faculty member, I can usually see this quite clearly: I teach them to think deeply and critically about their world and the structures they're implicated in. That's important! Just as important as building bridges, or whatever engineers do. :)
