An update for you

I went to the specialist this morning. I loved him - he was incredibly personable, kind, professional, competent, and interested, and NON-CONDESCENDING. He didn't rush me at all. A friend came with me and took notes, and that was incredibly helpful. I could just listen, knowing that she was getting it all down. She even asked some questions that I forgot to ask - she's a gem.

Anyway, he thinks it is likely not cancer, but a complex cyst that needs to be removed. This would require removal of the whole ovary. Just biopsying it laparoscopically would be a bad idea because if there were tumour cells inside, and they were cut into, they could spread. If it turned out that it was cancerous, I'd need to have other things removed while in surgery, possibly. But since it probably isn't, I feel quite relieved today. He is consulting with some oncology colleagues in Nearest Metropolis over the next day or so because it is apparently an unusual case (I am just giving you the barest details.) He will see what they think of of his plan, and I am going back in on Monday to make that plan, which will probably involve surgery in the next few weeks. Recovery would be 4-6 weeks. The only drag about this (because really, I feel quite a bit of relief) is that I probably won't be able to go on my May research trip to Paris. But that can be sorted.

That is amazingly good news. Sorry about the possibility of surgery and missing the trip to Paris, but, wow, really, much better diagnosis. I feel relieved so I can't imagine how you must feel.

What a relief - not least to be in the care of a really good specialist. Even though surgery is scary, it must feel good to have A Plan and somebody who knows what he's doing and who should be consulted to guide you through it.

Odd for news of imminent surgery to be a relief, but it really is! I'm glad you like your doctor and that you have a support system in place and that the diagnosis looks good and for all the rest of it. What a relief!

Encouraging news, indeed.

All the same, I'm keeping you in my thoughts.

That is great news. I'm very relieved for you. It's nice to hear that you have a good doctor there too. That's really important and they're not always easy to find.

So glad that the likely outcome is positive. And while surgery, with the accompanying 4-6 week recovery is not fun, it's a lot better than the alternatives if the tumor is cancerous. So here's to hoping this really is the story.

It really does make a difference to like the specialist!

Excellent news, Hilaire. And it sounds like you're in good hands with your doctor.

This is the best news I've heard all week! Fantastic - a good doctor and less-that-dire news!

That 4-6 week number may be stretching it a bit. My mum had a similar op and was roaming around bored stiff but fully functional two weeks out. You are young and fit and certainly won't be bed-ridden for long.

Whew. I'm so glad at the likely plan, and keeping fingers crossed it's what happens!

Thanks, all...It is pleasing, isn't it?

GAA - Yes, 4-6 weeks is probably pushing it considering my age. R had a hysterectomy a few years ago, at a very fit 36, and we took a trip 4 weeks later. So I'll hope for a speedy recovery.

Wooot! Whew. I am relieved.

I am sorry about the Paris trip, but perhaps you will be able to re-do it soon enough (Paris in Sept/Oct. is actually really nice, for example!)
