Discovering My So-Called Life

I am having a TV experience. I am watching My So-Called Life on DVD. I never saw this show, because it was on in 1994-95, and I didn't watch TV in the 90s.* But R watched the show, and was hooked, like so many people - and so she recently ordered the DVD of its single season. She watched and then passed it on to me. I am utterly hooked. I love it. R called tonight in the middle of one of the episodes I was watching. I was weeping a bit. I told her that for some reason, the show gets me on an emotional level. It really does. She said, "I kinda suspected you would identify with it." Damn me, do I ever. Probably more than any TV show I've ever seen. I know I'm, oh, fourteen years behind the hype here - and almost twenty years beyond the age the show is depicting - but wow.

And...back I go for another episode. It's terrible - I haven't touched my research all week. It's a damn good thing I'm almost done with the season, that's for sure.

*It's true - I'm not being cavalier. There are reasons for this - and they don't involve me taking an obnoxious moral stance against mass culture.

No tv in the 90s...wow.

I love My So-Called Life and was one among many who was disappointed with it's early ending.

I was the exact age as Angela Chase when the show aired. I also had the pink wash hair. The whole show was an obsession and I tend to avoid it now when I see it on re-runs, I get too emotional. I love that you're loving it!

Oh, I loved MSCL. Maybe that's what I should watch when I finish my 4-month Buffy rewatch campaign. (What was that about getting work done???

I'm delurking for a quick moment (and, uh, sorry --I always feel that I should apologize profusely for my lurking!) to say how happy I am that you've found MSCL! Have you watched the Christmas episode yet? (I remember bawling crazily when that aired!)

Not to sound like Amazon, but if you like MSCL, you may also enjoy Freaks and Geeks. It's a little lighter, a littler more comedic, but... it's got that thing --whatever that thing is --that makes MSCL so sweet and sad and happy.

I had a feeling some of you woud be fans! Sarah, wow - that's a powerful identification.

Mandy - Yes, I've actually watched Freaks and Geeks. R was given it as a Christmas present a couple of years ago. I LOVED it, too. But yeah, more comedic, not so acutely, painfully a transcription of the inside of a teenaged girl's head!

I never saw it, but it's been in our Netflix queue -- maybe I'll move it right up to the top based on your recommendation -- but not until spring break, since it's clearly seriously addictive!

I saw the title of your post and wondered whether it was about the show. I liked this too. What's more, the creators of that show just came out with a new one that has "cutting edge" potential - it's called Quarterlife. The reason it is cutting edge is that after ABC rejected the pilot, they went and put it on the net and now it is the first show to migrate from net to primetime. It is about 20-somethings (so maybe not as moving as the teenage thing) and has alot to do with blogging... I've only seen one episode so far, but thought it did say some interesting things about our students' (and our?) ideas about privacy, internet, and tensions between. --texter (hi, hilaire, long time no talk! hope you're well. Paris sounds fab)

WN - Yes, do move it up! I suspect you'll really enjoy it, especially as you're now teaching high school.

Texter - HI! How's it going? I read an article about Quarterlife a while back...it sounmded interesting. I'll definitely check it out!
